We should all eat more fibre. The gut-healthy fibre we should be after is insoluble fibre to aid with a well functioning digestive tract and diet. Whole hemp seeds are an excellent source of soluble and insoluble fibre, amongst other wonderful nutritious content such as protein and minerals. Their wonderful fibre profile is complemented by a unique rich nutty flavor and surprising texture. The shell of the whole hemp seed creates a pop and crunch when you eat it, much like the skin of a popped corn kernel. The shell is the key component of the whole hemp seed’s fame containing fibre as well as minerals and carbohydrates. This hemp food product is our only non-raw hemp food as it is lightly toasted in a commercial oven via infrared heat to comply with the sterilisation laws in Canada for whole hemp seed. The sterilisation process does minimal damage to the whole seed; the proteins are not affected, the minerals are not affected. The essential fatty acid profile is unfortunately affected and the vitamins are slightly affected. However, hemp seeds are not a valuable source of vitamins, which can also be said for any seed or nut. The whole hemp seeds we offer are available certified organic. Like all of our hemp seed products, our whole hemp seeds are Non-GMO and grown in Canada and is of the very best possible quality and freshness.
Soluble fibre dissolves in water, and what this actually does in your system is attracts water, absorbing it and creating a viscous substance to help slow down digesting – hence the feeling of feeling full for longer. Soluble fibre helps regulate the way your body digests food and has many positive outcomes such as decreasing the amount of insulin you need at once, which in turn regulates the absorption of sugars and interferes with cholesterol absorption, which lowers bad LDL cholesterol in your blood. Here is where the story gets interesting however. Insoluble fibre is one of the most important things in our diet simply because we don’t eat enough of it with so many processed foods out there today.
The shell of the whole hemp seed provides a satisfying pop and crunch. This makes whole hemp seeds less ideal for incorporating into blended and creamy textured foods such as dressings or smoothies but still excellent for salads, granola, cereals, desert bars. It adds a pop in your mouth to your favourite baking recipes or of course just a snack on its own. If you have difficulty manually digesting foods or have sensitive teeth or dental work but need to get that fibre in you, try lightly blending the whole hemp seeds using an electric nut grinder/processor or coffee grinder to break up the shells. Especially for kids, try seasoning and lightly toasting hemp seeds with various prepared flavoured seasonings to make eating them on their own more exciting.
