You may be planning to try a sustainable plant-based diet but have no idea on the basic principles of committing yourself to such change. It would be easier to start if you understand what it really means. A plant-based diet is a particular eating regimen that has been around for centuries and has been a foundation for different lifestyles and beliefs. It consists mainly of foods derived from plants such as vegetables, fruits, grains, legumes, seeds, and nuts. For beginners, a plant-based diet may sound a little vague.

Contrary to popular belief, a plant-based diet does not equate to a vegan or a vegetarian diet, meaning it does not completely exclude the consumption of food derived from animals. Plant-based is just an umbrella term. People who observe a plant-based diet may still eat meat, eggs, and dairy, but only occasionally and in a low quantity compared to the general population. This means that they are more inclined to consciously pick food that originated from plant sources.

If you are thinking about going on a plant-based journey, here are a few tips to help you start.

  1. Take one step at a time. Gradually increase your intake of vegetables in your meals and, at the same time, start decreasing the amount of meat you put on your plate. This will help you adapt to eating more plant-based food, instead of constantly craving meat.
  2. Assign a whole day for plant-based food. Out of the seven days of the week, choose one where you will commit to eating only plant-based food. You can build your meals around whole grains, seeds, and vegetables.
  3. Healthy and mindful snacking. Instead of reaching for that bag of chips, try eating plant-based food like hummus or a bowl of granola with fresh fruits and nuts. These are packed with nutrients ready to fuel your body every day, especially if you have a very active lifestyle.
  4. Have fruits for dessert. When craving for something sweet, reach for a ripe banana or a juicy and tangy pineapple.
  5. Stock your pantry with plant-based ingredients. For you to always have options, make sure that there are plant-based foods always available in your kitchen so you can easily prepare and cook a plant-rich meal.
  6. Prepare your meal. It is easier to stick to a diet when you prepare your meal beforehand since it makes cooking more convenient. You can cook meals in large batches and store them in the freezer for consumption for the rest of the week.

With its plethora of benefits, a plant-based diet is a welcome transition for anyone regardless of age and belief. It is highly nutritious and is very beneficial to those who have lifestyle-based health problems caused by having an unbalanced diet. Moving to a plant-based diet does not have to be difficult and painful. Rather, you should enjoy it even if you have to go slow, so you can easily adapt and incorporate it into your lifestyle.
